Why Is My Aquarium Water Cloudy? Causes and How to Fix It
Cloudy aquarium water can have several causes, from harmless bacterial blooms to algae, debris or poor water quality. Learn how to identify the cause and what to do about it.
Cloudy aquarium water is one of the most common problems fishkeepers encounter. A tank can look perfectly clear one day and turn hazy, milky or even green shortly afterwards.
The good news is that cloudy water does not always mean something is seriously wrong. The important thing is to work out why the water has changed before trying to fix it.
Different types of cloudiness have different causes, so adding treatments or carrying out a large clean without identifying the problem can sometimes make matters worse.
What Causes Cloudy Aquarium Water?
Cloudy water can be caused by several things, including:
- A bacterial bloom
- Dust from new gravel or substrate
- Uneaten food and organic waste
- Poor or insufficient filtration
- An algae bloom
- Disturbing the substrate during maintenance

Why Is My Aquarium Water White or Milky?

The same thing can happen when substrate is disturbed during aquascaping or maintenance.

- Too much aquarium lighting
- Direct sunlight
- Excess nutrients
- Overfeeding
- High nitrate or phosphate levels
- An imbalance between lighting, nutrients and plant growth
Start by looking for the underlying cause rather than simply treating the colour of the water.
Reducing excessive lighting, avoiding overfeeding and maintaining regular water changes can all help.
If the aquarium receives direct sunlight, moving it away from the window or reducing the amount of sunlight reaching the tank may also help.
What About Brown or Yellow Aquarium Water?
Brown or yellow water is not always the same as cloudy water.
Aquarium wood and other natural materials can release tannins into the water. These can give the aquarium a yellow, amber or tea-coloured appearance.
Tannins are particularly common with newly added driftwood.
This discolouration is not necessarily a sign that the aquarium is dirty. Many fishkeepers deliberately keep tannin-stained water for species that naturally live in this type of environment.
If you prefer clearer water, regular water changes and suitable chemical filtration media can gradually reduce the colour.
Can Overfeeding Cause Cloudy Water?
Yes.
Uneaten fish food breaks down and adds organic waste to the aquarium. Excessive feeding can also increase the amount of waste produced by the fish.
This can encourage bacterial growth and contribute to poor water quality.
Feed only as much as the fish can reasonably consume and remove obvious uneaten food where possible.
If cloudiness has appeared shortly after increasing the amount of food being given, overfeeding is worth considering as a possible cause.
Can the Filter Cause Cloudy Aquarium Water?
A filter that is clogged, undersized or not working correctly may struggle to remove suspended debris.
Check that:
- Water flow has not dropped significantly
- Filter sponges and pads are not completely clogged
- The impeller and intake are clear
- Water is passing through the filter media correctly
Do not respond to cloudy water by completely stripping and sterilising the filter.

Why Is My Aquarium Cloudy After a Water Change?
Some temporary cloudiness after maintenance is fairly normal.
Vacuuming the gravel or moving decorations can release fine debris that has settled in the substrate. This should normally be removed by the filter over the following hours.

Aquarium water clarifiers can help with certain types of suspended particles by causing very small particles to clump together so the filter can remove them more easily.
However, a clarifier does not fix every cause of cloudy water.
If the problem is being caused by overfeeding, poor filtration, algae or unsafe water parameters, treating the appearance alone will not remove the underlying cause.
Identify the problem first and use treatments only where they are appropriate.
What Should You Do When Aquarium Water Suddenly Turns Cloudy?
Start with a few simple checks:
- Test ammonia and nitrite. These should be the first priority, particularly if fish are behaving unusually.
- Check the filter. Make sure it is running normally and has good water flow.
- Think about recent changes. New substrate, filter cleaning, new fish or heavy feeding can all provide useful clues.
- Remove obvious waste. Uneaten food, dead plant material or other decomposing material should be removed.
- Avoid drastic cleaning. Do not replace all the filter media or completely strip down the aquarium just because the water looks cloudy.
- Give harmless cloudiness time to settle. If water parameters are safe and the fish are healthy, some forms of cloudiness clear naturally.

- Maintain the filter without over-cleaning it

- Avoid excessive lighting

A stable aquarium generally requires fewer drastic interventions than one that is repeatedly cleaned or altered.
